First United Church of Christ observes Christian baptism for children and infants. Water in the baptismal font is blessed and some of this water is used to baptize the child in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. This rite, undertaken before children reach spiritual maturity, derives its authority from a covenant among the parents, the congregation, and God. Parents and the congregation promise to raise the baptized child with Christian love, instruction, values, and example. It is essential that baptized children confirm their faith upon maturity.
Baptisms take place during Sunday morning worship. Parents or sponsors of the child should be members of First Church. The process begins when the family contacts the pastors or office to schedule a date that meets the needs of the parents and takes into account the church calendar. Pastors will meet with the family at least once prior to the baptism to become familiar with the family, ensure that they understand the meaning and accept the responsibilities of baptism, and familiarize them with the format of the baptismal service.
We encourage the role of godparents and invite them and extended family to participate in the service. We expect the family of the baptized child to raise the child according to the promises made during baptism and to participate regularly in the life of our church (party to the covenant) or, if necessary, in another of like faith.
First United Church of Christ also offers adult baptism. In this case the liturgy will include a statement of Christian faith by the baptized adult. If the adult also desires membership in First Church, their baptism can be incorporated into a service for receiving new members. The individual would first participate in a new members’ class and then be received into membership after baptism.
